In September 2025, the Dutch government confirmed its plans to raise the VAT rate on overnight accommodation as of 1 January 2026, affecting hotels, guesthouses and other lodging services, aiming to boost revenue and simplify the tax system. However, this aim may not take place, since the VAT increase will raise the price of accommodation services in the Netherlands, most likely with a negative effect on demand and the competitiveness of the Dutch hotel industry. Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that the reduced 9% VAT rate for culture, media and sports will remain, which offers some relief to the tourism sector.
