EU Suspends Retaliatory Tariffs for Goods from US Until 6 August 2025

1 minute

The European Commission has published Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1446 (the Regulation) in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), suspending the application of commercial rebalancing measures previously imposed on imports of certain products originating from the United States.

The suspension applies specifically to additional customs duties introduced under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/778 and earlier measures set out in Implementing Regulations (EU) 2018/886 and Implementing Regulation 2020/502. The Regulation extends the suspension period until 6 August 2025.

The rebalancing tariffs were initially enacted in response to US safeguard duties on EU steel and aluminium products introduced under section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act. Although a temporary suspension had previously been adopted through Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/786, the Commission has decided to prolong the suspension following the United States' extension of its own temporary suspension of ad valorem duty on imports from the European Union. The current measure aims to allow continued space for negotiation and de-escalation in transatlantic trade relations.

The suspension entered into force on the day following its publication in the OJEU, which was on 14 July 2025.
